Advanced dry macular degeneration (AMD) is also known as geographic atrophy. As more and more protein deposits develop on the retina, they can become clumped together around the center of the macula, resulting in lost photoreceptor cells and a black spot in the central vision. The loss of these cells is permanent. This is important because it is the photoreceptor cells’ function to gather light and send images to the brain.
Geographic atrophy is a progressive disease. It will start slowly but gradually worsen. The sooner the condition is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can be started.
