Fact about Glaucoma

Early diagnosis of glaucoma is extremely important because there are treatments that may save remaining vision.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a complex disease which can develop in one or both eyes. It is associated with the build-up of fluid pressure inside the eye, which left untreated, can damage the optic nerve.   Without treatment, people with glaucoma will slowly lose their peripheral vision. Eventually, the middle of your vision field may decrease until you are blind.

How is Glaucoma diagnosed?

At Boling Vision Center, our doctors use the very latest technology to identify patients with glaucoma. Successful diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma begins with a careful ocular evaluation. First, we measure the fluid pressure within the eye. Corneal thickness may affect this pressure reading and can be checked with an ultrasonic pachymeter. We examine your eyes thoroughly and look for optic nerve damage, both visually and photographically.

How is Glaucoma treated?

The most common treatments for glaucoma are medication and surgery. At the Boling Vision Center, we create custom solutions to properly prevent & manage your vision.  For most people with glaucoma, regular use of medications will control the increased fluid pressure. Laser surgery may be another treatment for glaucoma.

Preventing & Managing Glaucoma

Glaucoma is just one reason seniors should make regular visits to an eye doctor. Glaucoma can easily be detected through a thorough comprehensive eye exam at your ophthalmologist. The Boling Vision Center makes sure to include a visual acuity test, visual field test, a dilated eye exam, tonometry, and pachymetry as tools to detect early signs or symptoms of glaucoma. Have your eyes examined thoroughly and regularly.
